Note: Sinipee was a small village in a valley on the Mississippi River
about three miles north of the hamlet of Dubuque. In 1839, early thaws and
heavy rains flooded the valley. Hot weather, combined with the stagnant
pools of water left from the flooding caused a malaria epidemic which
wiped out the entire town except for the Vaughn family and a few people
who abandoned the village.
