Paul DiMarzio Collection of Severan Era "BRIT" AR Denarii

Mr. DiMarzio is an avid collector of London mint ancient coins and for a time was also collecting the Severan Era AR denarii with the obverse legend "BRIT", referencing the title "Britannicus" given to Septimius Severus, Caracalla and Geta after their victorious invasion of Scotland in 210. A type of Victory with trophy and captives represents the success of the entire campaign, however, Septimius Severus died in York in early 211 before he could return home to Rome.

Ex Paul DiMarzio Collection; Ex Dimitre Genoff, eBay, June 2004

Note: The difference in RIC between 193 and 194 is the description of Serapis standing facing or standing left. RIC 193 is standing facing and 194 is standing left - the only difference being the slightly shifted weight, slight lean left and slightly raised position of the left foot. Personally, I disagree with most of what RIC describes as standing left or right, which is why many of my descriptions do not exactly match RIC. In my opinion, unless both feet are pointed in one direction, not just leaning in one direction, with the heels not being the closest two points, the figure is standing facing and looking one way or the other.

RIC IV, Part I, 206a (C)
Ex Paul DiMarzio Collection; Ex Glenn Woods, NYINC Show, January 2006

Note: Exceptionally severe portrait of Caracalla with trademark scowl - his preferred depiction so as to inspire a feeling of respect and fear through intimidation. Considering he had just murdered his brother to take over the Empire solo, it most likely worked.
