Miscellaneous notes

From Curtis Clay on June 20, 2005:

Though not in RIC or BMC, denarii of Clodius Albinus Caesar struck at Alexandria are well known. Two types occur. One with obv. legend CL, rev. Fortuna Redux seated, which is rare. A spec. of this coin is mentioned in the footnote to RIC IV, Part I, 5, without any suspicion that it might be from Alexandria. Second obv. CLOD, rev. FELICITAS COS II, exactly like the corresponding Rome-mint coin RIC IV, Part I, 4 corr. Roger Bickford-Smith, in an unpublished 1993 monograph on Alexandrian denarii of which I have a copy, listed 14 spec., and I'll bet that at least another 14 examples have appeared on the market since 1993. Your ROMAE AETERNAE type (see above coin) is not attested at Alexandria, nor is its style exactly Alexandrian, though there are some similarities. A curious piece, most likely an ancient imitation, in my opinion
