Note: The reverse legend appears to have originally been erroneously engraved MAT AVGG MATER N M PATR, with the ER of the second MATER removed to make it look like it was supposed to be MAT SEN once it circulated instead of destroying a perfectly good die. This coin is perfectly preserved as-struck, so it really sticks out like a celator engraving error on this already scarce issue, listing Julia Domna as the mother of two augusti (AVGG), the senate (SEN) and the fatherland (PATR).

VICT AVG_GI-COS II P-P
Victory advancing left, wreath in right hand, palm in left
15mm x 17mm, 2.94g
RIC IV, Part I, --

Note: These legends are not listed in RIC for any issues.

RIC IV, Part I, 120c (Rome) and 499 (Laodicea ad Mare) for Septimius Severus have a reverse legend VICT AVGG COS II P P with Victory advancing left with wreath and palm. Those pieces, from both mints, are attributed to 198 AD.

So, perhaps this is the Julia Domna version of this reverse type, but the celator for some reason decided to add an "I" to each word referencing a name to make the whole coin consistently feminine syntactically? IVLIAI, AVGVSTAI, AVGGI? Then the reverse would read VICT AVGGI COS II P P, which I could see it being since there appears to be the bottom part of a letter to the right of the tip of Victory's wing. The coin was sent to David Sear for review in April 2006.

The first image shows the coin in uncleaned condition as I purchased it, the second image is post-cleaning.

Notes from David Sear CoA received on June 15, 2006: This hybrid appears to be unpublished: for the coin of Severus which served as the prototype for this reverse, cf. RIC 120c, BMCRE 258 and RSC/Cohen 694. gVF and struck on small flan, an interesting example of the irregular coinage produced in the early part of Severus' reign.
