21mm x 22mm, 4.27g
RIC V, Part I, --; BN pg. 389 (this coin?). Good VF, about 30% silvered with some brown and green patina. Unpublished variety.

Note from Steve Coulter: (this coin) belongs to the earliest phase of the first emission at Serdica - probably Spring of AD 271. I have not seen such a coin listed anywhere else previously. The other reverses recorded for this phase are VICTORIA AVG, ORIENS AVG and IOVI STATORI.

Note from Philippe Gysen on January 26, 2004: It is the globus which is intriguing. I found another exemplar with it (but a different cuirassed bust) in the Aufhauser auction 10 (1993), n° 572. The reverse die is different but the globus is well visible too. In fact this globus is an "omphalos" which is the usual attribute of Asclepios (=Aesculapius) but often neglected in the roman representations as mentioned by Ursula Kampmann (Asklepios mit Omphalos in der roemischen Reichspraegung, in Jahrbuch f. Numismatik u. Geldgeschichte, 42/43 (1992-1993), p. 39-48). It renders your exemplar more attractive.

Note from Barry Murphy on September 4, 2008: "This coin shares it's obverse die with two coins illustrated in the BN catalog, pl. 81 167 (ORIENS AVG) and 170 (VICTORIA AVG). On page 389 of the BN catalog, a coin is listed as "Coll. priv." but the description of the reverse doesn't mention the globe, but another example listed with SERD in the exergue is also recorded and illustrated on pl. 81 which shows the globe. Perhaps this the coin listed as "Coll. priv."."

Notes from Philippe Gysen on Jan 25, 2004: "I have a similar coin in my collection and I published it in 1995 (in French) amongst other Aurelians: Antoniniens d'Aurilien manquant au ripertoire de R. Goebl, in BCEN (bulletin du cercle d'itudes numismatiques, Bruxelles) vol.32 (2), pp.25-31. There is a high probability that our coins come from the same die. We have the two existing exemplars of this obverse when I check in the new inventory (in preparation, will be published by Sylviane Estiot in BNCMER XII.1. All the great public collections and hoards have been seen for this inventory. So, for this 8th emission (Nov 274 - Sep 275), we found 43 different obverse legends."

Consignor notes: VF/Fine. Well-centered on a very large flan. Perhaps the finest portrait of Aurelian to be found on this denomination. Some light silvering remaining.

Aurelian, Antoninianus, 270-275, Period II, Cyzicus, Officina 1
IMP AVRELIANVS AVG

Note: Unusual use of a pellet in the reverse legend

IMP AVR_E_LI_ANVS AVG
Radiate, cuirassed bust right
RESTITVTOR O_RBIS

VICTO_R_I_A AET
Victory standing left on globe set on exergual line, wreath upward in right hand, palm in left over shoulder
19mm x 21mm, 3.55g
RIC V, Part I, --; BN 1150 (same reverse die?)

Note: This reverse is not attested in RIC for Aurelian from any mint. The last issuer of the VICTORIA AET reverse legend in RIC V, Part I was Salonina.

Aurelian, Antoninianus, 270-275, Period III, Cyzicus
IMP AVRELIANVS AVG
Radiate, cuirassed bust right
MARS-I_NV_ICTVS
Mars, helmeted, standing right, spear in left hand, holding globe with Sol, radiate, nude but for chlamys over left shoulder, standing left, whip in left hand, captive on ground between them
XXI in exergue
21mm x 22mm, 4.03g
RIC V, Part I, 358 (R)

Note: Interesting shape of the V's in the reverse legend as compared to the obverse - the obverse V's are shaped as expected, where the reverse appear to be I's and the celator realizing the errors corrected them by adding a disconnected left leg to both of them. In hand, the coin appears to read MARS IN'ICT'IS.

Aurelian, Antoninianus, 270-275, Period III, Cyzicus, Officina 1
AVRELIANVS AVG

A C in exergue
23mm x 24mm, 4.20g
RIC V, Part I, 365 (C)

Note: I need to do more research yet on what the accoutrement on the left shoulder is to represent. It is obviously intentional and different from the plain cuirassed types and can be found on examples of Aurelian from the other mints.
