IMP C DIOCLETIANVS P F AVG
Laureate head right, divergent laurel ties
GENIO POPV_LI-ROMANI

Note: The difference between Class III and VI (both have the same exergue and field marks, weight range, axis and flan size) is the size of the portrait on the obverse. As such, some of the designations are subjective between the two groups. RIC does not plate examples of the obverses for both classes, making the distinction, at times, even more precarious. This specimen has the scarcer V_L legend break and RIC does not attest the I-R break for the series.

Note: The coin is slightly double-struck, as can be seen on Moneta's head. The double-strike probably accounts for the misspelling of MONET as MONIT and NOSTR as NOSSTR. However, this coin also has the short obverse legend where the expected legend is IMP C M A MAXIMIANVS P F AVG. The short legend was only used on this reverse for the star in exergue only in c. 300, so this piece is worthy of more study to determine when it was actually minted.

RIC VI, 207b (C)

Note: The officina mark on this example is a perfect example of the archaic digamma (also vau, or stigma) character that fell out of use during the Byzantine period. It is usually seen more of an S style and I cannot find the Unicode for this specific form with the pure vertical bottom stroke with serifs.

Note: RIC VI does not list a series with large wreath and no eagle in left field. Also, the weight is between the expected range of the #227-228 (6.0g-5.0g) series, like this coin but with wreath and eagle, and the #229-231 (4.0g-3.0g) series with eagle, no wreath.

Note from Ben Bridgwater on January 27, 2006 - The most logical explanation is RIC mistakenly lists 227 "reverse as no. 222" but meant same as 222 with wreath replacing eagle.
