Ex Roman Lode, VCoins, March 2009

Although not in the bust type listing in the K series in RIC VII, footnotes on p.200 include:

RIC 409: In addition another Ox coin not with Victory on globe but with rad. Sol stg. on globe; the rad. crown clearly visible. A similar case in Mun, where 1 specimen has the Victory on globe, another Sol rad., on globe. The m.m. of the latter almost obliterated by wear.

Ox = Ashmolean Museum, Mun = Staatliche Munzsammlung. 409 is a Constantine II piece as well, but with bust type (I1) laureate, draped bust right, Victory on globe in right hand, mappa in left.

RIC 410: 1 specimen (CoH) with Mars or Sol on globe instead of Victory (Bahrfeldt, pl. III. 14); another CoH with head of Medusa on cuir. (all off. S).

CoH = Cologne Hoard. 410 is also Constantine II but this one with (I1) left facing but same as above.

Note: At times, Bruun in RIC VII accounts for the center dot and most often not. In the footnotes on p. 206 the center pellet is accounted for in the mint mark on a "semi-barbarous" irregular specimen with PTR crescent exergue. The existence or lack thereof the center pellet is treated somewhat ambiguously in cataloguing RIC VII. Granted, on some issues, the center pellet is slight and others it is prominent. Was the center pellet a device to assist the celator in engraving the reverse design or in some cases is it a true series mark?

Note: The flan is unusually small for this period and is typical for what would be normal for c.335-337. However, the dies were executed for this size flan and this example is perfectly centered, so it's not a matter of being simply a compact flan. The anepigraphic series in bronze from Trier was only executed in 326, so this coin must be from that series, unless a later and currently undocumented series was produced, which would also help explain the lack of a citation in RIC for this combination of bust type and reverse.

Ex Warren Gemmell, metal detectorist in Great Britain and coin registered with Portable Antiquities Scheme, eBay, March 2008

Note: Barry Murphy believes this to be an imitative coin, based on his experience with other imitative pieces of what he calls "less fine style" he has handled.

Ex Warren Gemmell, detectorist find in United Kingdom and registered with Portable Antiquities Scheme, February 2008

Note: The exergue is misstruck or mangled, however, based on overall style of the coin and the strokes which do appear in the exergue, my best determination is TR . S

Constantine II, AE3, c.324-326, Trier, Officina 1
CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C
Laureate head right
PROVIDEN_TIAE AVGG
Campgate with six rows, two turrets, no doors, star above, top and bottom rows empty blocks
PTR . in exergue
17mm, 1.82g
RIC VII, --
Ex Keith Metzer Collection, April 2006

Note: This example is problematic. First, the obverse is for Constantine II and the reverse is normally only for Constantine I for Trier at this time. Also, RIC does not attest an official series with a pellet alone in the exergue. Footnotes on p.205 for RIC VII, 459 notes specimens referencing the Cologne Hoard (Max von Bahrfeldt, Münzen Constantinus d. Gr. und seiner Zeit aus dem Münzfunde von Köln a. Rh. 1895, Halle, 1923) for a different reverse type with . STR exergue and calls the exergual mark "spurious".

Constantine II, AE3, 324-325, Trier, Officina 2
CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C
Laureate, cuirassed bust right
VIRTVS-CAESS
Campgate with six rows, two turrets, no doors, star above, top and bottom rows empty blocks
STR in exergue
18mm x 20mm, 2.29g
RIC VII, --
Ex Keith Metzer Collection, September 2003

Note: Within footnotes on p. 205 in RIC, there are a number of VIRTVS AVGG and CAESS campgates described, but calls them "barbarous" as per Maurice referencing the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin collection, and no examples were available when RIC was written. This piece appears to be an official mint issue, based on style and the flan is as one would expect from a regular campgate issue, even in this slightly corroded condition.

Constantine II, AE4, Trier, Officina 1
CONSTANTINVS IVN NO C
Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right
VIRTVS-CAESS
Campgate with seven rows, three turrets, open doors, no star above, all rows of blocks alternating slashes and backslashes
PTR in exergue
16mm, 1.63g
RIC VII, --
Ex Keith Metzer Collection, October 2003

Note: RIC doesn't list any examples with this reverse legend, so I am not certain when this coin was produced. Also, the obverse legend is unattested entirely, so this piece may end up being an imitative issue of convincingly good style. There is an example in Victor Failmezger's book, "Roman Bronze Coins", of a Constantine II VIRTVS CAESS campgate (#362CII), but does not have the diagonal lines or open doors. Instead, it has pellets in each block. I would appreciate hearing of other examples from this series as it needs research and documentation.
