RIC VII, --
Ex York Coins, VCoins, October 2006; Ex Killingholme Hoard

Note: Mule of Constantine II obverse with Constantine I reverse. Although the reverse would be proper for RIC VII, 504 for Constantine I, the obverse for Constantine II from 327-328 should be a left-facing bust type. Also, the C at the end of the obverse legend is extremely thin and ended up part connected to the drapery.

RIC VII, --; IARCW 838/4690 Cae Bardd Hoard
Ex Keith Metzer Collection, April 2006

Note: This example is problematic. First, the obverse is for Constantine II and the reverse is normally only for Constantine I for Trier at this time. Also, RIC does not attest an official series with a pellet alone in the exergue. Footnotes on p.205 for RIC VII, 459 notes specimens referencing the Cologne Hoard (Max von Bahrfeldt, Münzen Constantinus d. Gr. und seiner Zeit aus dem Münzfunde von Köln a. Rh. 1895, Halle, 1923) for a different reverse type with . STR exergue and calls the exergual mark "spurious". All of these issues aside, the coin appears to be quite "official" in style.

Note update from Dane Kurth on January 29, 2008:  "I am currently working through the list of Roman Coins found in Wales, and they also found one example of this coin. The ref I am giving it in the list is IARCW 838/4690 Cae Bardd hoard, 1935-1937 (838 is the code for the Cae Bardd hoard, 4690 is the coin number in that hoard. IARCW is the abbreviation for the work done by Cardiff University."

RIC VII, --
Ex Keith Metzer Collection, September 2003

Note: Within footnotes on p. 205 in RIC, there are a number of VIRTVS AVGG and CAESS campgates described, but calls them "barbarous" as per Maurice referencing the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin collection, and no examples were available when RIC was written. This piece appears to be an official mint issue, based on style and the flan is as one would expect from a regular campgate issue, even in this slightly corroded condition.

Constantine II, AE4, Trier, Officina 1
CONSTANTINVS IVN NO C
Laureate, draped, cuirassed bust right
VIRTVS-CAESS
Campgate with seven rows, three turrets, open doors, no star above, all rows of blocks alternating slashes and backslashes
PTR in exergue
RIC VII, --
Ex Keith Metzer Collection, October 2003

Note: RIC doesn't list any examples with this reverse legend, so I am not certain when this coin was produced. Also, the obverse legend is unattested entirely, so this piece may end up being an imitative issue of convincingly good style. There is an example in Victor Failmezger's book, "Roman Bronze Coins", of a Constantine II VIRTVS CAESS campgate (#362CII), but does not have the diagonal lines or open doors. Instead, it has pellets in each block. I would appreciate hearing of other examples from this series as it needs research and documentation.
