Salzburg is a city on the western border of Austria and eastern border of Germany. It is sometimes listed in references as an Austrian or German state. However, in Krause, Standard Catalog of World Coins, 18th Century, 3rd Edition, Salzburg is described as such:

"A town on the Austro-Bavarian frontier which grew up around a monastery and bishopric that was founded circa 700. It was raised to the rank of archbishopric in 798. In 1803, Salzburg was secularized and given to Archduke Ferdinand of Austria. In 1805, it was annexed to Austria. Salzburg was part of Bavaria from 1809 to 1813, returning to Austria in the latter year. It became a crownland in 1849, remaining so until becoming a part of the Austrian Republic in 1918."
