In Sear Byzantine, the obverse is described as "pearl-diademed
wearing crested helmet (?)". On every example I've seen of this
issue, the unusual artifact in the upper field exists, so it is obviously
intentional. My guess what we are seeing is the same portraiture as the
gold issues, but in profile instead of frontal. If you look at the head,
the celator has engraved the usual depiction of hair below the bottom
string of pearls in the diadem. Above the top row of pearls, however, the
head is engraved smooth. I believe this is actually the bowl of the helmet
and the crest, as expected, surmounts the bowl.
