Note: RIC describes the bust type as draped and cuirassed, which does
appear to match Plate 11, 10. Cohen, however, describes it without the
cuirass, as on this example. There should probably be two separate
listings in RIC for the different bust types as on other examples from the
same period.

Divus Septimius Severus, AR Denarius, 211?, Rome
DIVO SEVERO PIO
Bare head right
CONSECRATIO
Four tiered ustrinum - the lowest most of which represents a plain podium with two large festoons, and the profile of a festoon at each end.
The next tier forms the sepulchral chamber for the reception of the dead body. In the center is a pair of
paneled
folding doors, flanked by two niches on each side with statues and surmounted by a cornice.
The tier above has four square-headed niches with statues and a cornice represented by beads; and the upper forms a lofty
plain attic with hanging drapery in front, the folds of which are very marked. A lit torch flanks each end of the upper tier, which forms a pedestal surmounted by the quadriga of the deceased, with his
statue in the chariot and holding a palm leaf in his left hand. All the tiers diminish in width from the base upwards so as to
assume a pyramidal form.

Note: The difference in RIC between 193 and 194 is the description of
Serapis standing facing or standing left. RIC 193 is standing facing and
194 is standing left - the only difference being the slightly shifted
weight, slight lean left and slightly raised position of the left foot.
Personally, I disagree with most of what RIC describes as standing left or
right, which is why many of my descriptions do not exactly match RIC. In my
opinion, unless both feet are pointed in one direction, not just leaning
in one direction, with the heels not being the closest two points, the
figure is standing facing and looking one way or the other.

Note: Exceptionally severe portrait of Caracalla with trademark scowl -
his preferred depiction so as to inspire a feeling of respect and fear
through intimidation. Considering he had just murdered his brother to take
over the Empire solo, it most likely worked.

RIC IV, Part I, 517 (S) Ex Albrecht Marquis Kubinsky von Hohenkubin
Collection, formed circa early 1900s.
Consignor notes: Fine. Rare - one of twelve known from just two obverse
and five reverse dies. Provenance verified by Curtis Clay of Harlan J Berk.
Hohenkubin (out of Vienna, Austria) was admitted to the Austrian
Numismatic Society in 1908 and was elevated to the aristocracy for
services in administering the financial assets of the Vatican. His home
was bombed out in WWII and the only reason his collection survived is
because it was not dug out of the rubble until 1955, long after the
Russians left. The collection was consigned to Numismatik Lanz in Graz in
1974, where the best coins were sold during Sale IV in November of that
same year. This specimen, being an unsold remainder, was sold with the
others to Vienna dealer Erich Mozelt in September 1994.
