background representing the arrival in Rome, so I do not know if this is a
variant for this reverse type or if the column is expected.

RIC IV, Part I, 253 (S)
Note: I bought this coin as a fourree, without having taken it out of the
holder it was in. A fourree would seem to be supported by
the light weight and scattered dark areas, however, in hand the coin does
not give the impression of being a fourree. If this is an ancient forgery,
the celator really did a phenomenal job with the reverse. It is far more
detailed and artistic than every example I could find on-line and
stylistically it's dead on for an official product.

at right, bareheaded, wand in left hand, flute-player in center
18mm x 20mm, 3.26g
RIC IV, Part I, 309 (R)
Note: RIC describes the reverse figure on the right as Caracalla, however in the footnote Cohen describes the right figure as a lictor and
the center figure as Concordia. I would propose the flute-player is correct, based on the figure playing a double-piped flute and the
lictor correct from the standpoint of the height of the center and right figures with respect to Severus. It is common in ancient
numismatic art for the celator to show the senior augustus or the ranking figure demonstrably larger than the junior or subordinate role
figure(s).
Interestingly enough, RIC IV, Part I, 181 under Caracalla a rare denarius with this same legend and reverse exists, minted during the same
period. That piece has an obverse legend of ANTONINVS PIVS AVG and RIC describes the coin as the same reverse, but footnotes the veiled
figure on the left is probably Caracalla and the figure on the right is an attendant. Since Caracalla would have been ruling jointly with
Septimius Severus as augustus when this coin was minted, the bare-headed figure on the right can hardly be Caracalla.
Notes from Curtis Clay on April 27, 2006: "My plaster casts show four rev. dies of this type for Septimius, on three of which the
sacrificing emperor clearly has a long beard, so it's Septimius not Caracalla. On the fourth die, which is this piece, a beard might also
be intended, but it's not certain. For Caracalla my casts similarly show four rev. dies of the type, all with a beardless sacrificing
emperor, so Caracalla himself, and no die matches with the coins of Septimius. This variation of including or omitting the beard of course
shows that the type was intentionally struck for both emperors."

RIC IV, Part I, -- (cf. RIC IV, Part I, 699 for same as AE As (R)) Ex Albrecht Marquis Kubinsky von Hohenkubin
Collection, formed circa early 1900s.
Consignor notes: Fine/VG. Unlisted in RIC for denomination. Provenance verified by Curtis Clay of Harlan J
Berk.
Hohenkubin (out of Vienna, Austria) was admitted to the Austrian
Numismatic Society in 1908 and was elevated to the aristocracy for
services in administering the financial assets of the Vatican. His home
was bombed out in WWII and the only reason his collection survived is
because it was not dug out of the rubble until 1955, long after the
Russians left. The collection was consigned to Numismatik Lanz in Graz in
1974, where the best coins were sold during Sale IV in November of that
same year. This specimen, being an unsold remainder, was sold with the
others to Vienna dealer Erich Mozelt in September 1994.
