Ex Roma Numismatica, Store in Rome, September 1997

Note: Although I describe this as Sol standing facing, as I usually do when the reverse figure is standing in this pose, RIC would normally describe this as "facing left". Interestingly enough, RIC does not list or footnote any examples with this pose and the plated coin is as they do describe "standing facing". Thus, I will call this a variant of RIC 83. This is the coin which began my journey into ancient numismatics. I bought it, while on vacation in Italy for three weeks with my mom and sister, and the rest, as they say, "is history".

Note: After a great deal of comparative research and debate with a Gordian specialist, although this specimen appears to me to be an AE as based on weight and flan style, I am conceding and reclassifying this coin as a sestertius. This would be an unlisted type as an as, thus it makes sense, based on the flan size and known examples, to classify this as a sestertius. However, the lightest sestertius example I could find for this emperor standing with spear and globe type is 17.22g - over 5.00g heavier than this specimen.

Many thanks to Axel Juerging for the debate on the piece.

Note from Curtis Clay on March 15, 2005 - Actually there was a specimen of this coin, from different dies, in the Dorchester Hoard, according to RIC 62, BM ex Dorchester Hoard, pl. 1.16. It's not listed in the original publication of the hoard in Numismatic Chronicles, 1939.

Note: RIC only lists this reverse legend on 213 for Antioch on an antoninianus, but without the N. This type was not minted at Rome, nor in base metal denominations. Unusually thin flan and appears to be somewhat crystalized. Vel attributed this coin as RIC 213A with a rating of R3, however, RIC does not describe this coin at all, so I am not certain how he determined this designation.
