Volume IV, Part III - Trajan Decius
 |
Trajan Decius, AR Antoninianus, 249 (?), Group I, Rome
IMP TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG
Radiate, draped, cuirassed bust right, seen from behind
D_ACIA
Dacia, wearing robe reaching feet, standing left, draco battle standard in right hand
21mm x 24mm, 3.81g
RIC IV, Part III, 2b (S)
Note: The draco battle standard is indigenous among Dacian troops. This standard is often described as being surmounted by
an ass's head, but is actually a wolf.
More details from Wikipedia:
The Dacian Draco was the standard of the ancient Dacian
military. It had a wolf
head with the mouth open, with a snake
body, made out of bronze
and it ended with some linen stripes. It was put on a rod and if held in
the air while galloping, it made a whistling sound, due to the air which
entered the wolf's mouth.
The draco was originally developed by the Sarmatians
and Alans,
cavalry peoples of the steppes.
The earliest evidence of the Draco in Dacia
was found on 4th century BC pottery discovered in the Prahova
county of Romania.
On Trajan's
Column the Dacian soldiers are often represented carrying a Dacian
Draco: there are no less than 20 representations of the Draco. The only
copy left was found in Germany,
which was probably a trophy won by the Roman troops from the wars with the
Dacians. After the Dacian wars the draco was adopted by Roman cavalry.
A draco was a Roman cavalry military standard borne by a draconarius.
Thought to have originated with the Dacians,
it took the form of a gaping dragon's head and mouth formed from cast
metal, to the end of which was attached a 'body' of cloth or silk fabric
in the form of a windsock.
When charging, the body would billow out behind the head. It is also
thought that the draco was sometimes fitted with a whistle of some form,
since there are descriptions of it making a howling sound when borne into
battle.

Milan mint. The Milan mint was established by Gallienus in late AD 259.
These issues of Decius attributed in RIC and RSC to Milan have been
reattributed as the last issue of the Rome
