CONSTANTIVS AVG
Laurel and rosette-diademed, cuirassed bust right
GLOR_IA EXERC_ITVS

Christogram on banner
[PLG] in exergue (off-flan)
14mm x 15mm, 1.83g
RIC VIII, 8 var. (horizontal bars vs. X in symbol on banner)
Ex Midwest "Coins of Christianity" Collection
Note: This coin comes from an interesting period where the Lugdunum
(Lyons) mint was using a variety of Christian symbols on the bronze
issues. The careful and fine style of execution of all of the elements on
this specimen should be enough evidence to preclude the execution of the
symbol on the banner being intentional. The expected symbol is a Chi-Rho
(XP
/ Christogram), instead of the two horizontal bars. The other bronze
issues during this period have a reverse legend of AETERNA PIETAS and
issued for Divus Constantine I. The symbols in the field on these issues
are both staurograms (Tau-Rho or TP), however, one of them has a
horizontal crossbar and the other a slanted crossbar, similar to the
Russian Orthodox cross. Certainly a series
well worth further research and documentation, since they were obviously
minted in the years just after the death of Constantine I and his
conversion to Christianity on his deathbed. There may be other Christian
symbols on these series which could be analyzed and documented.
