From what I can gather, early in the 20th century, there was a German collector named Otto Voetter, who published his collection. It included two PROVIDENTIAE coins of Constantius II with exergue ARLD. He also mentioned a third coin, with same exergue, but also having S \|F in fields. He proposed series of ARLA, ARLB, ARLG, ARLD and S \| F ARLA, S \| F ARLB, S \| F ARLG and S \| F ARLD. This would tie in perfectly to the with and without S \| F markings on the regular officinae series. Bruun found the first two coins in Vienna, but the only evidence of the S \| F coin was from a line drawing in Voetter's catalog. The two coins he saw were a 5-layer and a 6-layer gate, so definitely from different dies. Nevertheless, he decided to dismiss all of these as some sort of error by a mint worker. All of this is mentioned very briefly in RIC VII in the footnotes to Arles 312. I would say your new specimen, from officina A, puts more evidence to Voetter's original theory. Besides a new officina, this piece is also with a new obverse.

RIC 291) Ex Mike Vosper Coins, VCoins, April 2009 Overstruck on a type of (uncertain which mint because of the obliterated exergue): Licinius II, AE3, 321-324, Cyzicus, Officina 1 D N VAL LICIN LICINIVS NOB C Helmeted, cuirassed bust left, spear in right hand over shoulder, shield in left IOVI CONS_ERVATORI Jupiter standing facing, head left, naked but for chlamys across left shoulder, Victory on globe in right hand, scepter in left, eagle with wreath in beak at feet at left, bound captive on ground at right X / IIG in right field SMKA in exergue 19mm x 20mm, 2.96g RIC VII, 18 (R1) Note: When one encounters an overstrike on a Late Roman Bronze, it quite often involves a local unofficial mint (?) striking a currently circulating design on an official Roman mint host coin of a previously demonetized type. At least, that has been my experience over the past 10 years of collecting LRB. The reason I use a "?" when calling the striking authority unofficial is because I'm not entirely convinced it wasn't actually some sort of "quasi-official" mint which was tasked to reissue demonetized small coinage in the remote areas of the Roman Empire instead of shipping them new coinage. Many times the overstrikes are quite official in style and very close to the correct legends and marks. The differences between this example and an official Arles mint RIC 291 are the exclusion of the expected crescent in the exergue between A_R and the style of the doorway. The missing crescent may be explained by a filled die or by obfuscation resulting from the undertype, but it doesn't appear to be the case. The doorway is another matter entirely as even though it is 50% mangled by the host coin, what is struck clearly on the flan differs significantly from all other examples of the open-door types without the S \| F field marks. Also, as is often the case, the overstrike is positioned obverse to reverse of the host coin. Why was this done? I'm not yet certain, but what I have come to expect on LRB overstrikes. On the reverse of the overstrike, the host D N V of the original legend can be seen to the left of the top of the turrets. The tail of Licinius II's helmet and part of the spear is what mangles the design on the left side of the gate and the archway. On the obverse of the overstrike, the ORI of the legend is clear, as is the entire seated captive and the IIG of the failed monetary experiment of Licinius, valuing this bronze issue as 12-1/2 nummi (the G is actually a character for 1/2 that I can't reproduce). The exergue of the host has been completely obliterated, making any attempt at determining the issuing mint purely speculation based on style.

"Irregular" specimens from period of RIC VII

The obverse legend is unknown on official issues, the exergual mark without field marks is unlisted for Arles and the use of a pellet to substitute a letter for a ruler is only used on campgates from Nicomedia and only for caesars (ie. using a pellet instead of a terminal S in CAESS). The style of this specimen looks official, but there are so many unusual aspects that I'm putting it under the irregular section as I am unclear as to where it would fit in under official chronology. Also, another extremely unusual feature of this particular specimen is that it appears to be a follis fraction. The flan is smaller than usual for the campgate series and the dies are specifically engraved for the smaller flan size. Comparing this specimen to the many Arles pieces in my collection, the portrait is quite clearly intentionally and proportionately smaller than the regular size folles. Much more research is needed. The composite image shows the relative size of this specimen as compared to a random Arles campgate of the period (RIC VII 286 minted in 325-326).

Also note, there is no officina mark on this coin. Much more research is needed.
